Lily & Mia | First Day of School

First day of school... what?  Seriously, where has the time gone?  Just yesterday, I walked into work, announced my pregnancy and put these two babes on the waiting list.  For those of you who don't know, I teach Pre-K and my school takes children as young as 2.  I've been excited for these girls to start for some time now.  I love the idea that they will be steps away if they ever needed me.  So, three days a week they'll be at school and the other two days they will be with Gawa (grandma).

All summer long, I have been trying to prepare them for "school."  I would talk about how they were going to go to "school" and make new friends and play with toys and learn new things.
I bought them backpacks and lunch boxes since they were staying a full day.  I never realized how stressful it could be to order backpacks!  I shopped around and thought about these here, but ultimately went with these here from Pottery Barn.  The McKenzie style has a pre-k bag option which was perfect for storing the necessities.  Diapers, wipes, a change of clothes, and their crib sheet/blanket for nap.  It's easy to buy two of the same thing since there isn't much thought to it.  But I was adamant that their backpacks would be different, but similar.  There were multiple evenings this past summer where I was up at 3am for no reason and I would scroll through the selections and figure out which two would match up.  Finally I stumbled upon these two and I couldn't be happier.

They even got brand new school shoes.  To tell you the truth, I think I had more anxiety for their first day than they did.

This morning was all sorts of fun.  The girls woke up and came into the living room to find their brand new backpacks and lunch boxes.  It was like Christmas morning.  Mia couldn't wait to put on her new "pack pack".  Lily just wanted to drag it everywhere.

We actually made it out the door on time!  No Lie.
Mia was super excited to go and wasn't into my picture taking.  She tried to humor me when I said to "say cheese".

Lily was ready to go too.

Seriously mom, enough... Let's go!

Sister hugs

Lily was ready to play, but Mia was still a little weary about what was going on.

It didn't take long to race up the stairs to get to the slide.

Lily is my adventurous one.  No fear.

Mia is a little more cautious.  "cash, cash"  (catch, catch)

Saying goodbye was tough.  I gave them kisses goodbye and they both looked at me with confused faces as to why I would be leaving them on a playground by themselves.  I did my best not to be that parent who hovers and spies on their children.  I put a lot of trust into the women I work with and I know that my angels are in great hands.  All my other co-workers went to go check on them for me and I had nothing but good reports from each of them.  The girls were doing great.  Mia was a little more assertive than Lily.  She constantly wanted to go back outside and had no problem asking any teacher or parent that walked through the door if they could take her.  I'm gonna have to teach this girl "Stranger Danger"  !

When I came to get them at the end of the day, Lily ran into my arms with a huge smile on her face and Mia continued to play with the toys and said," Momma!"  She was not ready to go.  Which somehow was a relief.

We gathered up our things and headed out.

Mia chucked her bags on the ground and headed straight for the play equipment.  I thought they would have been anxious to get home.  Boy was I wrong.

All in all, it was a good day.  Their first "First Day of School"  was a success.  Much love and appreciation to their two teachers for the care and patience they had with these two. And to all my co-workers for helping me keep my sanity by being my twenty eyes and ears.

With love,
Angela
